MALVERN'S Alex Cupper won the boys' under 16s foil at the West Midlands Age Group and Senior Fencing Championships in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

The Millfield School year nine sports scholar qualifies for his seventh time representing the region at May's British Championships in Sheffield.

Cupper, a member of the England under 15s foil team, progressed to the final with relative ease where he was up against Bromsgrove School's year 11 pupil Sam Sung.

It was a hard-fought contest with Cupper winning 14-13.

Cupper had returned home to Malvern from Somerset after helping his school hockey team to a victory whitewash in the Somerset Championships and stopping in Bristol to be interviewed by the BBC about his role in film The Kid Who Would Be King.
