PAUL Lane won Malvern Anglers' Roy Bouston Memorial Shield on the River Severn at Holdfast.

Despite persistent heavy rain, a good number braved the conditions to pay tribute to the fondly-remembered member who loved to fish the river with the club.

After heavy rain in previous days in Wales, the river level rose quickly throughout the match but remained fishable although in most pegs anglers struggled to get a few bites.

Nevertheless having drawn his favourite peg towards the downstream end of the stretch Lane caught a few good-sized bream using a heavy swim-feeder rig with maggot and worm bait to weigh in 22lb 8oz.

Having just rejoined the club after several years of absence, Steve Davies showed he still remembered how to fish the water by catching a bream of about 5lb and a few other smaller ones to weigh in 13-14 for second place.

Steve Warren was frustrated to have lost a lot of big fish that would have boosted his remaining weight of 6-11 beyond third place.

Dave Harris caught 5-11, John Shaw 3-12, Lee Harman 2-11, Frank Edwards 2-4, Dick Oakley 2-0 and Nigel Bayliss 1-13.
