KEN Yates took the plaudits as Malvern Anglers started their winter league match series at Tarrington pool on a bright but cool autumn day.
Although there were a few big carp, the match was limited to silver fish only as the venue also held many roach, bream and perch.
All anglers managed to catch plenty of small fish but it was the bigger ones that made the difference towards the winning weights.
Fishing midway along the pool, Yates used light float tackle with single caster bait to attract a mixed bag of fish including roach and a bonus perch of about 3lb that boosted his winning weight to 12lb 1oz 0dr.
At the far end of the pool, Paul Lane used single maggot bait to tempt a few skimmer bream for his second-placed weight of 11-2.
Richard Webster, after a slow start in a shallow peg, had a late burst of catching roach for 11-0.
Frank Edwards managed 7-6, Nigel Bayliss 6-9, Steve Warren 6-9, Ian Goddard 6-1, Dave Harris 5-1, Lee Harman 4-8 and Chris Loveridge 4-4.
