WEST Malvern suffered a disappointing Worcestershire League Division Four defeat at the hands of new leaders Old Vigornians.

Not since 2005 had the villagers lost back-to-back matches or, since going down to Stone in 2011, been beaten at home.

Mid-way through the game, however, fortunes were going the way of the Wests after a fine bowling and fielding display dismissed their opponents for 168.

Alex Hall (3-19) and Will Jones (3-10) were the pick of the bowlers alongside two wickets apiece for Pete O’Connell and Sam Beaumont plus a couple of catches for Will Lloyd.

Rain interruptions restricted the hosts to 46 overs but, even with a strong batting line-up, wickets fell regularly.

The Wests were dismissed for 121 with 10 overs left as only Glenn Collins, with a gutsy 58, and Matt Blackbourn (13) got into double figures.

They have a derby at Newland tomorrow (1.30pm) and bid for their first win of the season against Barnards Green thirds.

The Wests’ seconds held on for a Division Five losing draw at Hallow to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Hallow skipper Paul Young’s brutal hitting threatened to take the game away.

Captain John Owens turned to the guile of Robin Lloyd who bowled Young with a googly for 55.

Simon Wood toiled valiantly without success but James Blackshaw (2-28) and Owens (2-51) took wickets although Graeme Fowler (53 not out) and 46 extras helped Hallow to 223-5 from 45 overs.

The previous week’s centurian Bill Wood (26) and Robin Lloyd got the Wests reply off to a solid start.

Despite a rain break reducing the overs and three quick wickets, the run-rate was on track for at least a winning draw.

But more wickets fell, including Lloyd lbw for a well-crafted 78, and hopes of any extra draw points went.

With the score on 181-9, Owens and Bill Munn saw off the final nine balls to avoid defeat.
