THE Worcestershire’s men’s ‘A’ team played their second match of the season at Evesham and came away with a creditable 4-2 victory.

The best result of the day was Tom Howells (4 handicap) and his partner Ed Hill (9), who recorded a fine 3&2 success.

There were one-up wins for Terry Smith (8) and Phil Dance (4), Andy McCabe (6) and Paul Wakely (10) and Kevin Carter (6) and Brian Kendall (12).

Mark Reed (5) and Richard Sebok (12) just came up short losing 2&1, while Jason Allies (4) and Lee Whittall (7) were up against an inspired pair, eventually losing 4&3.

The club’s ladies’ section recently competed for two well-established trophies.

The Veterans’ Cup, first contested in 1931, was won by Davina Taylor with 33 points from Sue Boardman (32) with Jen Bishop beating Jill Exell (both 31) on count-back for third place.

The Novices’ Cup, contested since 1961, was won by Pauline Taylor with 27 points, from Kay Bromley with 26. Meanwhile, the best round of the day came from Cathy Harris in the 18-hole stableford with 34 points to win from Laura Spears (32) and Tina Jukes (31).

The nine-hole stableford resulted in three players on 17 points, with Jenny Jones winning on count-back from Sue Doswell and Jan Strain.

In inter-club matches, Di Wilde successfully captained a friendly team against Minchinhampton to a 4-0 win at Malvern.

The victorious players were Jane Tromans and Corrine Mills, Di Wilde and Davina Taylor (both 4&3), Sally Dare and Jill Piner (2 &1) and Brenda Jones and Joss Penrhyn (one-up).

However, the ladies met tough opposition away to Bewdley Pines. Team captain Mary Horrobin, Jill Exell and Corinne Mills just failed to secure their matches, Brenda Jones won hers and Helen Thomas secured a half, as the home team won 3½ to 1½.

The Worcestershire Golf Club played host to the Worcestershire and Herefordshire County Ladies’ first team for their 36-hole match against Gloucestershire, playing foursomes and singles.

W&H were 3-1 down after the morning session and failed to recover in the afternoon, winning only one more match and halving three, resulting in a win for Gloucestershire 8½ to 3½.

Representing W&H were Anna Rock, Karen Greenfield, Lesley Fox (all Kidderminster), Megan Perry, Ellie Lawrence (all Enville), Laura Whitehead (Droitwich), Sarah Cranton (Stourbridge) and Cath Francis (The Worcestershire).
