UPTON’S losing streak continued with a 23-13 home defeat to Newbold-on-Avon despite their best performance since the start of the season.

While missing most of their back-line, the improved display could be the start of a recovery from the relegation- threatened Midlands Two West (South) club.

Forwards Chris O’Neil and Tom Dodge played at centre with a first start for Matt Dunwell at openside and a return for Lorcan Lynch after a three-year absence.

Upton’s lack of confidence showed early on and, from a line-out on their 22, the Newbold backs shipped the ball wide and scored a converted try under the posts to follow up a penalty.

However, the hosts took over with Lynch, Max Mac- Farlane and Oli Jones impressing as they won penalties at the breakdown.

O’Neil slotted two before half-time with Newbold countering with two of their own to make it 16-6.

The visitors started the second period brighter but Upton’s defence kept them at bay.

However, an innocuous grubber kick bounced off second row Chris Thomas’ knee and fell for the winger to jog in under the posts.

Upton then dominated the second period as Thomas ruled the line-out.

But the hosts struggled at the ruck and could not break through.

With the last play, Upton went through the phases and, from a quick tap penalty, O’Neil raced over for a converted score.
