A SWORD has been seized and suspected drug drivers caught as police kick off a seatbelt enforcement campaign this week.

Police in Herefordshire are taking part in the national campaign to ensure more drivers and passengers belt up while on the roads, with several stops made across Herefordshire yesterday (June 29).

Officers from Herefordshire's Operations Patrol Unit said multiple tickets had been issued to drivers stopped on the county's roads for a host of offences, including to a lorry driver who said he had forgotten his seatbelt.

Meanwhile fellow officers from the South-West Mercia Local Policing Priority Team, which operates across Herefordshire and Worcestershire reported a total of 19 drivers for excess speed, six for no seatbelt, seized two vehicles and arrested one person for drug offences.

A pro-active stop search carried out by officers carrying out the seatbelt enforcement campaign across the two counties also resulted in the discovery of a sword, which was seized by police.
