A CITY hair salon is offering two local hairdressers the chance to set up their own salon business for free.

David Jon Hairdressing, based in Reindeer Court, is run by Jon Rimmer and David Ching, who also trade from the salon with chair-renter Stephanie Ching, have the opportunity to welcome two more self-employed hairdressers to the salon.

To support the new prospective businesses, they are offering six weeks completely rent free to help the successful applicants to get their new business off the ground.

Mr Rimmer said: “I began running a chair rental business back in 2012 after being an employed hairdresser for 35 years.

“Within the first 12 months, my annual salary increased by approximately 30 per cent.

“I love the flexibility I have with my work schedule. I was initially nervous about moving away from the salon I had been based in for so many years, but if you communicate with your client base openly, they will follow.

“Looking back, my only regret is not doing it earlier in my career.”

In addition to offering the successful candidate 6 weeks rent free, the salon are planning to support with business set up advice and guidance, as well as support with social media and website formation during this period of lock down, so that they are ready to hit the ground running when the salon re-opens.

All initial conversations, interviews and start up support will be done remotely until it is safe to reopen the salon.

As reported previously by the Worcester News, rent-a-chair agreements are becoming more and more common within the hairdressing industry, which can pose challenges for hairdressers who are at the beginning of their career and possibly have a small client base as they are forced to pay rent whilst potentially doing limited work.

By offering six weeks rent free, the salon hope this will enable two individuals to get a business off the ground, completely risk free.

Once the 6 week period ends, the intention is that the business will be able to continue trading from the salon, for a weekly rental of £160, inclusive of all utility bills.
