HEREFORDSHIRE has experienced significant and widespread flooding over the past week following Storm Dennis and a number of roads are still closed due to flooding or because they are damaged.

Herefordshire Council said roads and re-opening when safe to do so and have increased resources to respond to a heightened demand across the network.

But roads such as Holme Lacy Causeway will remain closed for "the next few weeks" while repairs are carried out.

Holme Lacy Causeway

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson said the B4399 Holme Lacy Causeway is closed due to structural damage to the edge of the carriageway.

Inspections are currently being carried out and repair work is being planned. Work on site should get underway this week.

The road will remain closed for the next few weeks, the spokesperson added, and further details will be provided in due course.

Herefordshire Council said there are two affected sites on this stretch of road; a landslip and a partially collapsed retaining wall.

Due to the complex nature of these sites, repair works will take time and the current road closure is likely to be in place on a longer-term basis.

The spokesperson said the council needs to ensure the area is stable before we can begin to assess options for repair.

Don't ignore road closures

"Please be aware that these roads are not safe to use by any mode of transport and we would urge the travelling public not to ignore any road closure signs – they are in place for your safety," the spokesperson added.

"We will provide further updates when more information becomes available.

"Please do not enter flood water or put yourself at unnecessary risk. If your home has been flooded and there is no threat to life, dial 01432 260000. If you are in danger, always call 999."
