READERS have reacted to a story on seemingly healthy trees being chopped down without being replanted in Worcester.

JimmyPB said: "These trees enhance the street scape for everybody and should be replaced when felled. The council has been anti tree by the side of roads for at least 50 years, that is why the number of roadside trees is far fewer now than then. In New Road where they felled trees they trumpeted about replacing them, but in Cripplegate Park, missing the whole point about the benefits of roadside trees."

CISO said: "Our children and their children will never see road names such as Elm Close, Oak View Road, Beech Avenue, etc. I wonder if they will start calling them Brick Road, Concrete Close, Ram-Packed-With-Tiny-Houses Drive?"

Shizen said: "It's probably all about running cost for maintenance avoidance. Once a tree is gone there is no need for further husbandry. Short sighted and brutal approach. Bean counters calling the shots no doubt."

It's not just Worcestershire Highways it's across the country - Sheffield lost hundreds of trees over the last few years. In years gone by we used to maintain the trees to a size, now due to budget cuts they get no routine maintenance, they get too big and they take the easy option and just chop them down.

"What gets me is the heavy handedness of this. There is practically no consultation. People are not stupid if a tree REALLY has to come down due to disease or there really is no other way I think people will accept it as long as a new tree is planted elsewhere.

"Trees cool the streets in summer, help to clean air pollution and generally improve the look of the hard surfaces in the city. You have an opportunity to decide what you want - ultimately you get what you vote for!"
