A VICTIM of one of three burglaries in one night has said he was shaken up by the break-in and fortunate not to have had anything stolen.

The Meadowbank Drive resident, who did not wish to be named, said he must have disturbed the burglars before they could take anything last Thursday night (October 24).

Sergeant Carl Jones told the Worcester News there had been a night of burglaries that police are linking: the Meadowbank Drive one, another in St John’s and a third in Lower Wick.

The Meadowbank Road resident said: “I have insomnia so I went to bed about 7pm on that Thursday night. I woke up about 10ish, and that must have been when they heard me. I went downstairs at 4am and saw what I thought was ice on the floor, switched on the light and it was glass.

“They punched a hole through a window to open the back door – they must have been carrying a mallet or something like that to do it. They didn’t take anything – police told me they were probably after jewellery and money. I am lucky, when I hear of people losing sentimental items that are irreplaceable.

“Afterwards I started to think about it – anything could have happened. I live alone, and it has made me queasy thinking about it.

“I will definitely increase security now, I’m going to have security lights and CCTV.”

Sergeant Jones added: “We are investigating the burglaries, have made no arrests, but we have some leads.

“We are linking them. We have increased patrols, we will have officers in uniform and in plain clothes. We would reassure residents this area is usually quiet, and has a low level of crime.

“We would ask people to do the right things, lock doors and cars, and if you see anything suspicious like someone lurking around tell the police.”

Residents in Meadowbank Drive said generally the road was quiet although one told the Worcester News they had been burgled two years ago, just after they moved in.

Anyone with information on the latest burglary is asked to call police on 101, quoting 0071S.
