A WOMAN caught driving when she was more than twice the legal limit has been banned from getting behind the wheel.

Supansa Tipton admitted driving when her alcohol level was above the limit when she appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Emily Clewer, prosecuting, said Tipton was spotted by officers in her Skoda Yeti on the A4133 Holt Fleet road in Ombersley at 4am on October 7, taking bends sharply.

Miss Clewer said: "Officers followed the car.

"She was veering from one side of the road to the other. Police stopped the car, and she smelt of alcohol. The defendant took a roadside breathalyser test, which she failed."

The prosecutor said Tipton was taken to Worcester Police Station where she gave two readings the lowest of which being 93mcg of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit being 35mcg.

Miss Clewer said this was a high reading putting it in the bracket where she could receive a community order.

Chris Aggrey, defending, said: "She is extremely remorseful for her actions.

"It was completely out of character. This is her first time in court."

Mr Aggrey said she had moved to England from Thailand with her boyfriend a number of years ago, and he was attending court to support her.

Mr Aggrey said Tipton had on the night before been to see her friend and had planned to have a few drinks.

"She consumed eight cans of Stella," he said.

"Very naively she waited a few hours thinking that would be sufficient time to get back on the road.

"Obviously that was extremely poor judgment."

Mr Aggrey said the inevitable driving ban would lead to her losing part time work, and it would also have an effect on her daughter, as she used the car to take her to activities.

A probation report found Tipton, of The Furlongs, Stourbridge, was suitable for unpaid work.

Magistrates gave Tipton a 12 month community order with a requirement to complete 80 hours unpaid work.

She was disqualified for 23 months but was offered the drink drive awareness course, which if she successful completes will reduce her ban by six months.

Tipton was also ordered to pay costs of £135, a victim surcharge of £90 - a total of £225, which she will pay off at a rate of £20 a week.
