A MUSICAL event will take place, aimed at getting younger people involved with their church community.

The Pop-Up Community Big Sing will see a choir singing songs from The Greatest Showman and other favourites - and the audience is being asked to join in.

Rachel Clamp, church warden for Claines Church, said: “There’s has been a decline in church numbers all across the country, including in the county, as more and more people get married then move away.

“The congregation is made up of mainly elderly people as a result.

“As a church, we want to bridge the generation gap and for young families to spend their weekends being a family but doing so as part of the greater church community.

“If you’re sitting on the fence about coming along - just do it as stepping through the door is the difficult part.”

The idea for the choir, has come from a Worcester Diocesan project called Calling Young Disciples, where Claines, St George’s and St Stephen’s churches in north Worcester are encouraging children, young people and whole families to get involved in their communities and local churches and have lots of fun.

Claines and St George’s Curate, rev Paula Honniball, who will be leading the choir said: “Everyone is welcome, singers of all abilities who would just like to come along and sing with others."

Spokeswoman for the Diocese of Worcester, Sam Setchell, said: “Church of England churches have always been community hubs, places where people can come together to worship God.

"It’s fantastic to see so many of our churches opening our doors for a variety of community events.

"Everyone should be able to find a welcome in our churches.”

The free event will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 1.30pm to 4 pm at Claines Parish Hall, in Cornmeadow Lane and refreshments will be provided.
