WORCESTER’S MP says parliament will stop the government from doing its job if it continues pursing no deal legislation.

Robin Walker was speaking after opposition and Tory rebel MPs took over Commons business, and began their attempt to pass a law designed to prevent no deal Brexit.

If passed the bill would give the government until October 19 to either get a deal approved by MPs, or get MPs consent for a no deal exit.

If that deadline passed without either outcome, the bill would then require Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ask the EU for an extension to January 31, 2020.

Mr Walker said those calling for an extension past October 31 - the date the UK is set to leave the European Union - were not making it clear what they wanted it for.

Mr Walker said: “If you follow the logic of the (first) vote then it will pass.

"At that point parliament would be stopping the government from being able to do its job. Parliament is trying to stop Brexit. We ought then to be holding a general election.

“Parliament should have let the PM go to the European Council and see the outcome of that.

"What do they want an extension for? My constituents are fed up with the delay, they want their vote to be respected.

"If we have a delay, all it does is tell the EU there is no reason for them to negotiate and we continue to pay them money.”

Mr Walker said in normal circumstances the government should last until 2022, but what was happening could lead to an election.

“If we have the election, I am ready to fight it,” Mr Walker said.

“I will be supporting the PM and the call for a general election to decide this issue because I think it is absolutely essential we respect democracy and respect what people voted for.”

On Tuesday 21 Tory MPs had the whip removed for voting against the government.

"There are some good colleagues among them, but the government had to follow through (with removing the whip)," the MP added.
