THE tragic death of Sorina Gheorghe after she lost control of her car on the M5 is a harsh reminder of how dangerous motorways can be.

The 24-year-old was described as a nervous driver, who, despite having lived in the UK for six years had been fearful of using the motorways.

She was driving under the speed limit by police estimations when she naively attempted to overtake a van and trailer but as she tried to correct herself the car veered off across two lanes.

At the drop a hat, anyone could be killed when handling a car at that sort of speed and it begs the question why more isn't done to educate inexperienced drivers before they take to the motorways.

It's not compulsory to be taken onto the motorway while learning to drive but as of June last year learners can use these roads with a qualified instructor.

The likes of Miss Gheorghe are obviously slipping through the net, having avoided using motorways until she was forced to by her job. Unleashing an unconfident driver with no experience onto roads where people often exceed 80mph seems ridiculous.
