BRITS love to moan about roadworks, including me.

And I am sure I speak for everyone when I say the roadworks in Sidbury over the last 10 weeks have been absolutely hellish.

Journeys have been taking ridiculously long and causing an enormous amount of stress and anxiety to many, with people missing doctors appointments and other important meetings as well. It is as if Highways wanted to make Worcester as inaccessible and off-putting as possible during the summer.

And what exactly was the point in all this? What is it about the roads that meant they so badly needed digging up and thus throwing Worcester into chaos?

The work includes replacing the traffic light system, extending approach lanes and installing a new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing.

There was nothing wrong with the pedestrian crossing – and extending the approach lanes? Why?

All I can say is thank god it is nearing the end. London Road is a nightmare at the best of times, but you would think that on a Sunday morning traffic would be calm, but no, it takes 25 minutes just to get from the top of London Road to the college. Hideous.

There have been times when I have left the office at 8pm and felt as though I were in the dark expanse of rush hour.

All I can say is thank god it is on track to finish, or so Highways chief John Fraser says.

Mr Fraser said: “Sidbury is one of the most complex junctions in the city and it was never going to be possible to carry out these necessary improvements without causing some inconvenience to road users.”

“That’s why we chose to carry out the work in the school holidays, and we are on schedule to complete the work involving lane closures by Wednesday, September 4.”

Some inconvenience?

I can’t really understand what the point of the roadworks was, however I can understand why they decided to carry out the work during the school holidays.

Strangely, I feel the traffic will calm down a lot when the kids go back, as although there will be many more cars on our roads, the roadworks will have finished. Worcester workers might even throw a party.
