West Mercia Police's Local Policing Priority Team South has tweeted about the incident, explaining a taser was not needed due to ambulance staff de-escalating the situation.

The LLPT account tweeted: "Called to assist our colleagues at @OFFICIALWMAS after they were confronted with a male brandishing these knives.

"We attended alongside @SWorcsCops to provide #TASER support but it was the bravery of the ambo crew that de-escalated the situation without force being used."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 4.20am to reports of a intoxicated patient.

"One ambulance attended and police were called by the crew.

"The patient did not required hospital treatment.

"The trust has a zero tolerance policy in place and works extremely hard to bring the full weight of the law to bear on anyone who attacks our staff. It is simply not acceptable that staff who are there to help people, suffer at the hands of patients, their relatives or other people at the scene.

"On this occasion, the crew weren’t hurt but were confronted with a patient brandishing knives.

"The crew requested police back up and used their conflict resolution training to good effect to diffuse the situation prior to police arriving.

"Thanks to West Mercia Police for their assistance."
