THIS coming Sunday Castle Square in Ludlow will be literary bursting with green activities for everyone to get busy with.

There will be a toy and clothes swap, no money needed, just bring something to swap, free ‘print your own green slogan’ T-shirt making, Ludlow Green Festival banner making, a cookery demo at 12.30pm

A Sustainable Kitchen with chef Hamish Dolphin, children’s seasonal cookery sessions at 11am and 2.30pm. There will a creative seascape made by Ludlow Scouts and Cubs for people to experience as well as lots of advice on living without plastic, composting, electric bikes and vehicles and more.

This year there will also be an opportunity to have a go on the Soap Box in between the live music acts as well a bar provided by Ludlow Brewery.

“We are very grateful for our many volunteers who will make this a very special day, particularly the teachers and pupils from Ludlow Church of England School who are making a massive contribution this year in all areas,” said co-ordinator Tish Dockerty.

Another contributor is the Shropshire Furniture Scheme, which is organising the toy swap and is also a key sponsor.

However, Ms Dockerty adds that underneath all the enjoyment on the day, there is a serious message.

“Ludlow 21 is urging local people to either get involved in local action groups that work to improve our community or at least make the effort to change their behaviour, do become more aware of your actions, choose to think twice when buying goods in unnecessary plastic packaging, walk or bike not drive when possible, buy local and seasonal, eat less meat and grow your own fruit and veg,” she said.

This year’s theme for the festival is 21 Years and Counting, inspired by the 21 years that the organising body has been in operation. The group is hoping that the recent international press coverage that green issues is having will help local people grasp the realities of what is happening to our planet. Ludlow 21 has always been about sustainable action for our local community and has been involved in many initiatives over the years to help achieve this.

Their main achievements have included setting up of the Local to Ludlow initiative that aims to increase consumption of local food and drink, thus reducing food miles and supporting local producers. To get involved email: tish.dockerty@tdky.co.uk
