A DRIVER was taken to hospital after a ‘serious’ crash on a road in Worcestershire.

The two-car crash on the A449 near Droitwich caused traffic chaos during rush hour on Wednesday morning.

The road was closed northbound while members of the emergency services helped the drivers.

One man was given trauma care at the scene and has since been taken to hospital in an air ambulance.

A second patient was assessed and discharged at the site. The crash happened near the Mitre Oak pub at 6.45am.

PC Daniel Bate, from West Mercia Police, said: "Air ambulance and ground ambulances attended the scene, treating one man with serious injuries.

"He was then air lifted to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham where he continues to receive medical treatment.

"Upon arrival, officers closed the road at the exit for Ombersley from the A449 and a diversion was put in place with the southbound carriageway remaining open; there were lengthy delays in both directions.

"Following recovery of the vehicles the closures were lifted around 9.45am."

Drivers were forced to queue through Holt Fleet and along the A4133 throughout the morning with police telling motorists to look for different routes.
