A PENSIONER who was punched in the face during an unprovoked attack says he is disappointed after receiving Marks and Spencer vouchers as compensation.

Royston Tippin, from Worcester, was assaulted after he responded verbally to a driver who had shouted abuse at him.

The 79-year-old claims the driver got out of his car and punched him in the face, which resulted in him getting a black eye.

Following an investigation by PC Debbie Threadgold, the man, from Worcester, received a conditional caution and voluntarily made an offer of financial compensation to Mr Tippin.

Mr Tippin subsequently received £200 worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers – within 10 days of the attack.

Police have not named the man who received the caution.

Mr Tippin said: “I expected money. I’m very disappointed with the outcome. This bloke should be named and shamed. I am nearly 80, I feel so let down.

“I don’t think it’s worth the trouble now. I want all this to be put behind me.”

His daughter, Claire, said: “I agree with the compensation being made within the 10 days, but with the conviction in my opinion it’s not good enough. He was given a caution, how is that punishment?

“I just think it gives other people the green light to break the law.

“In my dad’s eyes, it’s done and dusted. The police have made their decision, he can’t change it, so he just wants to leave it alone.”

PC Debbie Threadgold said: “West Mercia Police is committed to providing a high-quality level of service to everyone within our communities.

"A thorough investigation took place, a caution issued and a voluntary offer from the cautioned individual to the victim of a gift voucher valuing £200 from a  high street store.

"The incident was resolved within ten days of it occurring and we all hope that Mr Tippin is recovering well and that he is happy with the resolution.”
