STAFF from a charity are celebrating after being awarded £360,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work with young people and the wider community.
Droitwich CVS has been running for more than 20 years providing support to local groups and promoting voluntary action. The charity, based in Droitwich Spa, will use the funding to deliver mentoring and courses in the heart of the community to young people to improve social mobility in west of the town.
Tonia Enderbury, chief officer said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way.
“Now, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to broaden the range of opportunities available to young people and the wider Westlands community. This is important because our recent resident’s consultations showed that they wanted a functioning community hall with a variety of activities on offer and 90 per cent wanted more support for young people.”
The charity runs a Community Transport scheme, education for post 16’s not in mainstream education, volunteering, venue hire and training and support for voluntary organisations.
The funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes, will provide a central community base within the community hall for information, drop-ins and events. This will create six new jobs for three years over the life of this project.
The charity, in Ombersley Street East, will be able to support members of the community to become cohesive, active and financially self-sustaining groups in their own right.
This will help them to build relationships with others experiencing the same challenges and hopefully enable them to develop their own support network.
Lynne Duffy, community volunteer said: “I have been supporting the Westlands community for 12 years and have been leading on similar Social Mobility projects in the area. I am hoping that this project will work with the young people that really need support and make a difference to their futures.”
