THERE are not many British meals that are more iconic than fish and chips.

On National Fish and Chip day last Friday, we asked readers to name their favourite takeaway.

Here (in no particular order) is their pick of the county’s top 10.

1. Audrey’s Fish Bar, Tudor Rise, Ross-on-Wye
Otherwise known as Tudorville Chippy, this family-run shop, started by Audrey and Ken Riches and now run by Audrey’s daughter Sharon and her husband, Graham Element, is popular with residents and visitors to the town alike.
Tucked away in the south Herefordshire town, it’s worth finding for a good cod and chips. Audrey’s has been a Ross landmark for decades, a ‘no frills’ shop, serving ‘good old fashioned British cuisine.’ You’ll also find a small selection of grocery essentials and, in aid of charity, second hand books.

2. Edward’s Plaice, Grandstand Road, Hereford
Available on delivery service Deliveroo, you can enjoy a traditional fish and chip supper at home without even leaving your house.
Some customers said they’re the best they’ve ever had, with crispy, golden batter and a selection of different foods, with house burgers including chicken and vegetarian options. Haddock, plaice and scampi are cooked to order. The popularity of this shop might mean you have to queue, but you’re served quickly.

3. Dimarcos, Bargates, Leominster
For those in the north of the county, you can choose to eat in or takeaway at Dimarcos. With good service and situated next to a car park, it makes for an easy visit.
With kebabs on offer as well, reviews suggest people travel from Hereford to get some good food from this family-run business. “always good value with generous portions”.

4. Fiddlers Elbow, Rosemary Lane, Leintwardine
Fish and chips can be accompanied by the best real ale at this village in the far north of the county.
Fiddlers Elbow was named in the top 50 takeaways serving fish suppers by Fry Magazine earlier this year after a mystery diner was clearly left very impressed. “We pride ourselves on serving our customers delicious genuine dishes like: fish and chips, burgers, sausages and more! We do not serve fast food, we serve quality food as fast as we can!”
And, the icing on the cake, customers can take their order to the brilliant Sun Inn pub next door to wash down their meal with a wide selection of liquid refreshments in the Grade II listed parlour pub.

5. Angel Fishbar, Bridge Street, Kington
Another of the county’s family-run fish and chip shops, Angel Fishbar serves up a relatively extensive menu, ranging from kebabs to spring rolls.
The generous portions of their freshly-cooked food prove popular with customers, and there’s even a couple of tables if you can’t wait to get home to tuck in.

6. Old Stables, Prill Road, Ewyas Harold
For those at the other end of the county, the Old Stables’ reviews online say they have consistently good fish and chips.
This chippy in a little village is only open Wednesday-Friday, but Marcus and his team will greet you with a smile and provide good service from start to finish.
The queues on a Friday evening can be long, but with two welcoming pubs, The Temple Bar Inn and The Dog, just across the road, it’s no hardship to wait.

7. Batterlicious, Eign Street, Hereford
Back up in Hereford, the curry sauce at Batterlicious is clearly a hit, as well as good portion sizes and good vegetarian food. A short walk from the city centre with plenty of parking nearby so your food doesn’t get cold on the way home!
They have a curry sauce which rivals others in the county and their southern fried chicken is recommended by customers if fish isn’t really your thing.

8. Oceans, St Owen Street, Hereford
While some customers fall out of the neighbouring Barrels, others drive from miles around to get to Oceans for the fish which is never frozen and known for its great quality.
Fish is sourced from the Faroe Islands every couple of days – always cooked from fresh, and the chips are cooked in a separate pan so they never touch the batter, or any other ingredients.
The food, including the wonderful pies, is made on the premises by the friendly team of staff while meat for the faggots comes from a local butchers and potatoes, to make the chips, are bought from nearby farms to ensure that ‘food miles’ are kept to a minimum.

9. The Village Chip Shop, Moreton-on-Lugg
Customers requiring gluten-free food will have no problems here, as patrons say their offerings are consistently good.
A stone’s throw from Hereford and with ample parking nearby, freshly-cooked food is available throughout the day, except on a Sunday.

10. Whitecross Fish Bar, Whitecross Road, Hereford
Customers paid tribute to the shop’s owner Kyriakos Kyriakou who sadly passed away earlier this month. Kyri always greeted his customers with a smile and will be missed.
The menu features burgers, doner meat and fried chicken in addition to the traditional fish and chips, with a vegetarian halloumi burger a new addition.
