A BUSINESS in Bewdley is celebrating National Fish and Chip Day this lunchtime by raising money the families of British fisherman lost at sea.

From 12pm to 3pm this afternoon (Friday, June 7), Merchants Fish Bar will be giving back to their loyal customers while also raising money for the Fisherman's Mission, a charity which supports widows and families of British fisherman lost at sea.

The shop, which has been operating in Load Street for 23 years, is partnering with Redditch frying range manufacturer Florigo to offer a 'Lucky Dip Lunchtime', which gives customers a chance to win prizes - from a free side to a dinner for four - with every order this afternoon.

They are also asking for people to give a donation to Fisherman's Mission, with Florigo promising to match each donation.

Merchants will be decked out in National Fish and Chip Day posters, bunting, t-shirts and hats for the occasion.

Florigo operations manager Andrew Smith said: "We want to make the day about the shop and its customers.

"it is really important to us that we take the time to say thank you to Merchants, to the staff, to the customers.

"We don’t often think about where the food on our plate comes from.

"Fishing can still be dangerous but there are people who take that risk to provide for the nation.

"Fisherman’s Mission is about taking care of the families of those who we lose each year to the perils of the sea."
