SIR – Re Robert Hale’s Fair Point about HS2 (May 21).

Robert is correct that reduced journey times was an issue when making the original case for HS2.

However, another key issue, which Robert totally ignores, is new capacity. Our current Victorian-built railway is breaking at the seams while trying to run more and more and faster trains on an ageing track system.

This leads to exactly the problems that he highlights – four million hours of delayed journeys in 2018.

I am sure the same arguments raged in the 1960s when our motorway network was being planned and built to accommodate increasing traffic volumes and the need for faster journeys.

Imagine life in the UK if we had not made the investment in our motorway network. Yes, HS2 will be expensive but once built it will provide the benefits of more reliable train journeys for 50 years or more.
