A COLLEGE which has been described as providing a “lovely atmosphere” has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award.

Worcester Sixth Form College, in Spetchley Road, has been nominated for the College or post-18 Education and Training Provider Award.

Jo Payne, who submitted the nomination said: “Students have a dedicated tutor who oversees their welfare and academic progress.

“Tutors also help students to develop their plans about what they want to do after leaving college and offer support to achieve them.

“Student Services has friendly, qualified staff providing a wide range of advice and guidance including careers advice, work experience, counselling and mental health, financial help and volunteering.”

In 2017, the college had an 88 per cent university acceptance rate - the national average is 76 per cent.

The college introduced an Ambition Programme this year and is aimed at high achieving students who might want to apply to competitive universities.

The Ambition Programme helps students to become more informed about university choices and make them a more attractive applicant to competitive universities.

The programme aims to inspire students to achieve their best, guides them in researching university options and helps them to develop confidence and flair in academic discussion.

Student Henna Aslam said: “There is so much support on offer to all students, covering all aspects of college, and I am so glad to have had the courage to seek out and take advantage of everything that is available. There is a lovely atmosphere and I enjoy the freedom and independence I get. I feel that it will be a great stepping stone from school to university.”

Edward Senior, the principal said: "I am delighted that Worcester Sixth Form College has been nominated in the Worcester News Education Awards.

"The nomination is testament to the dedication of all our staff who support our students through their subject expertise and outstanding pastoral care to help every student reach their full potential."
