A TEACHER who goes “above and beyond” has been nominated for a Worcestershire Education Award.

Sue Bates from Dines Green Community Academy has been nominated for a Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs Bates, aged 49, began teaching the year 1 pupils at the school in Tudor Way, Dines Green, two years ago. She has moved up with the class and now teaches the same group of children.

Mrs Bates, who has been in the teaching industry for 11 years, said: “It feels absolutely amazing to be nominated.

"I love that wow moment, the realisation that children who did not believe in themselves go on and achieve.

“The children have me in stitches every day. They are so funny. The year 2’s are my children.

"There are only 16 of them in the class so it enables me to dedicate my time to all of them. I am going to absolutely cry my eyes out on the last day of term when they move up a year.”

A parent said: “My son has been taught by Mrs Bates for two years now and she has formed a special bond with class. She always goes above and beyond to help the children in and out-of-school hours. We use a system called class dojo and guaranteed if you message her with any problems she replies immediately, whether it be evening or weekends.

“She very quickly picks up any struggles my son is having and deals with them there and then. For example his hand writing was getting quite messy, she spoke with us about this at parents evening when she said she thinks he may benefit from writing joined, lo and behold the next week his homework was joined writing and his hand writing has improved.

“Dines green are very lucky to have her.”
