A POLICE officer who was caught speeding and had penalty points slashed from his licence after appealing has sparked a huge reaction from Worcester News readers.

David Newell was caught speeding at 50mph in a 30mph zone on the A443 at Holt Heath. Mr Newell, aged 49, successfully appealed against his sentence at Worcester Crown Court on May 5, where the number of points on his licence was dropped from five to three so he could carry on his role as an advanced police driver.

Speaking about the penalty points deduction, Charles Smith said: “How can the officer concerned be an advanced driver if this is his style of driving? Heaven help any officers he tries to train to advanced driving level. Given his job he should lose his licence for at least 18 months and then have to take a proper driving test, not carried out by a police officer. It would be a different story had he been attending an emergency using blue lights and siren. At least he didn’t try the old dodge, only doing 130mph to test the car.”

Teme Player said: “This is utter madness. He should be confined to the desk for the duration. One law for them and one for us.”

Raymond Delauney said: “49 years of age with 29 years’ service. He’ll be retired at 50 after 30 years with a nice lump sum and full pension. He could see it out behind that desk.”

Karlmunson74 said: “This is disgusting. The officer has already been caught speeding. Like the rest of us choices come with consequences. How can he possibly carry on being a traffic officer if he is to continue to flout the law? 50mph in a 30mph he should know better. Maybe a desk job would suit the officer better as he can keep his right foot flat to the floor all day.”

Debs-1967 said: “What makes him so different from any of us. He’s a disgrace to be called an advanced driver for the Force.”

Whilst Mr Newell already had three existing points on his licence for a previous speeding offence, he was given five penalty points, which meant he had eight points on his licence which affected the role he performed as a police driver in London.

Mr Newell, from Shrewsbury, admitted speeding though the Worcestershire village at around 1pm on September 10 last year and was given a £415 fine.
