A CHARITY match for a former Evesham man who is battling cancer was held at Evesham United’s ground last Thursday.

Mark Taplin, a 51-year-old father-of-two, watched the game played at the ground live on the internet as he was too unwell to attend.

Mr Taplin grew up in Evesham and now lives in Tewkesbury with his family, and is battling bowel cancer.

The match was organised by his former colleagues at the Rybrook Worcester dealership, with the two teams made up of members of staff.

There was a fantastic turnout at the the Spires and Hartwell Jubilee Stadium, of more than 300 people, who watched the teams play out an entertaining game between the teams.

Players also spelled out his name on the backs of their shirts.

Overall an impressive £1,606 was raised on the night, which is being put towards the thousands already raised for Cancer Research UK through donations.

Meanwhile, Pershore Town Football Club is to host a charity football match in aid of St Richards Hospice.

The game is being held at the Community Stadium from 3pm on Saturday, May 4, and will be a match between past, present, committee and youth players.

The first team also gave a donation, along with supporters, during Pershore Town's last game of the season against WEM Town played last Saturday.
