A DANGEROUS driver has been spared jail after he drove at a police officer who tried to stop him for speeding.

James Turner had already admitted dangerous driving and speeding when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Friday for sentence.

Turner, 25, of Par Green, Kings Norton, was speeding on the Alvechurch Highway near the junction with the M42 on August 27 last year.

A speed check by officers revealed he was driving at 104mph, well above the 70mph speed limit.

Siobhan Collins, prosecuting, said an officer wearing a high visibility uniform stepped into the lane and signalled for the defendant to stop.

"He did not and drove at the officer. This made the officer jump back onto the kerb to avoid the defendant's car" said Miss Collins.

Turner overtook other vehicles on the white hatched markings as he drove on the A441 towards Birmingham, turning into the Hopwood House pub on the busy bank holiday.

"The defendant puts his fingers down his throat in a clear attempt to make himself sick" said Miss Collins.

However, when he was breathalysed he would found to be under the limit.

Judge Jim Tindal said: "What an idiotic thing to do."

The judge sentenced him to 12 months in prison suspended for two years and ordered him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

He banned him from driving for 12 months and ordered him to complete an extended driving retest. No separate penalty was imposed for the speeding matter.
