AN ORGANISATION which helps adults with learning disabilities enter the world of work has been nominated in the Worcestershire Education Awards.

The Worcestershire branch of Mencap, based in Worcester, was nominated for the SENCO award in recognition of the vital work the group does in offering a helping hand to those in need.

Diane Hughes, lead employment co-ordinator from Mencap, said: “The work we do as an organisation is so vital because it gives opportunities to people who otherwise might not have them.

“We help young people with minor learning disabilities to get work experience and further employment and we go with them to their placement to make sure they are okay, as well as giving them support and building their confidence.

“It is really rewarding to see the young people we have helped go on to secure employment and a wage.

“What is extra special is seeing them being able to buy things like you or I because they have an income - it is liberating and gives them freedom and independence they otherwise might not gain.

"It is extremely rewarding when someone comes to us who is very shy introverted before becoming much more confident and open to social interaction."

Mencap’s Lifestyles and Work Employment Service delivers supported internships helping young people with learning disabilities gain paid employment whilst improving their English and Maths skills.

The deadline for nominations is April 18. Finalists are chosen by a panel of judges and winners are announced during an awards ceremony in Worcester on on June 20.
