TRAFFIC lights were destroyed when a car smashed into them on a busy city road.

A Ford Focus hit the lights on City Walls Road, near the crossing at the Union Street junction, at around 7am, forcing police to close the road during rush hour.

An eyewitness told the Worcester News: "Traffic was bad on my way to work. I was diverted as the road was blocked and it took me twice as long to get to work. I noticed the traffic lights had been destroyed from the accident."

Police said only the car which hit the traffic light was involved in the crash and there were no serious injuries, and that the vehicle was removed from the scene.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said they were not called to the scene.

Worcestershire County Council was made aware of the crash and will repair the traffic light.
