MOVES are being made to keep Sunday football alive in Herefordshire.

Only six sides entered the league this season which was won by The Lion from Leominster.

Joe Mathias, the Football Development Manager at the HFA, has now written to clubs seeking to gauge the levels of interest for the 2019/2020 season.

He said two new teams – one from Hay-on-Wye and another from close to the Shropshire border – have enquired about entering sides next year which would help to improve the competition.

The Sunday League has seen a substantial drop in the number of teams over the past 10 years and only five of the six sides completed their fixtures this year after Cosmos pulled out midway through the season.

But Mathias hoped the "encouraging" requests from the two new teams would bode well to provide an "improved offer and competition next season".

He has written to all existing teams to see if they will be entering sides next year and is also inviting feedback to pass on to the Hereford Sunday League officials.
