A COLOURFUL trio of mandarin ducks look contented in Kington in our picture of the day.

This beautiful image was snapped by Hereford Times Camera Club member Catherine Turner-Joll, who said: "There are some great places in Herefordshire that people can visit and I visit them fairly regularly. One of my favourites is the small breeds and owl park near Kington. I took this photo of mandarin ducks there a while ago.

"I like watching birds and just wish there were more bird hides around Herefordshire."

Introduced from the Far East, escaped or released birds bred outside of captivity to establish a large wild population in Great Britain during the twentieth century.

The pretty little water birds are now found on lakes and wetlands across the country, with a UK breeding population numbering around 2,300 pairs and around 7,000 birds wintering in the UK.
