A MAN has been convicted of spitting in a female hotel worker's face.

Mandeep Atwal, aged 37, pleaded guilty to abusing and spitting at an employee at a Droitwich hotel.

He was told to complete unpaid work and pay compensation to the victim, during sentencing at Worcester Magistrates Court.

A probation worker added: "He said he had consumed about eight pints and 10 shots.

"He doesn't remember why he was being abusive to the member of staff at the hotel."

Atwal has previous convictions for drugs and a domestic matter and was last before the courts in 2015, the court heard.

The probation service added: "There are potentially attitudes to women that could be addressed. I'm quite hopeful that something can be done with Mr Atwal."

Amanda Tomkins, defending, said: "He was out with his friend.

"He was extremely frank with police that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

"He isn't someone who drinks on a regular basis. He accepts there was some sort of disagreement with a member of staff. He wishes to apologise. He is remorseful."

Ms Tomkins added that the defendant lives at home with his parents.

He was the general manager of a 24/7 family shop until the beginning of last year, the court heard.

However, he lost his job after the owners decided sell the store and look for a smaller site.

Ms Tomkins added: "He is on benefits but as soon as a shop is found he will be back there working full-time."

David Devine, prosecuting, said Atwal, of Elsma Rd, Oldbury, near Birmingham, threatened to slash hotel staff, smash their faces in and called them a grass.

He added that the defendant also spat in an employee's face.

Worcester Magistrates Court ordered the defendant to complete 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days and 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was also told to pay £135 costs, £100 in compensation and an £85 victim surcharge.

Atwal, previously of Cowslip Close, Catshill, Bromsgrove, was convicted on November 29.

It is believed the crimes were committed at the Holiday Inn Express, in Wychbold, near Droitwich.
