A CITY Post Office which has been shut for more than a year will not be reopening.

The Post Office previously said it had temporarily closed the branch in Gresham Road, Dines Green, Worcester, for ‘operational reasons’.

However, city councillor Richard Udall, who represents the area, now says the new tenant has decided against reopening the branch.

Cllr Udall said: “The Post Office is seeking a replacement in Dines Green. I’m going to keep pressure on them to make sure they fulfil this promise.

“There are many services that have left Dines Green – pubs and other services. We can’t afford to lose the Post Office, it’s a place for local people to congregate together.

“Dines Green needs it and people want and require the services - anything from a passport application to details regarding your tax. Not everyone has computers.”

Cllr Udall added that the Post Office does not expect to open its new branch before Christmas.

He previously said that some residents, particularly the elderly, could not walk to the next Post Office, in St John’s.

The councillor found out that the closed branch would not reopen in a letter he received from the Post Office on Wednesday.

It stated: “Regretfully, as the premises was no longer available for Post Office use, we had no other option but to close the branch.

“We would like to retain continuity of service for our customers but, at this stage we do not have the capacity to provide a service to Dines Green over the Christmas period.

“I do understand that customers will be concerned about the current closure of the branch but, we are committed to maintaining access to Post Office services in this part of Worcester and will restore service as soon as we can.

“Whilst we continue to work hard on finding a permanent solution, Post Office services can be accessed at the St John’s Post Office branch.”

The Post Office apologised for the inconvenience relating to the closure and said it could not reveal all of the details due to contractual obligations to the postmaster.

There has reportedly been a Post Office branch in Dines Green since the estate opened in the 1950s.

The branch closed on September 27, 2017.
