Press statement Charlton Village Remembers the Sacrifice of its Young Men in the 1914 – 1918 War The Workman Trust that manages the Old Schoolroom in the village of Charlton near Pershore, is celebrating the award of nine silhouettes funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. The silhouettes represent the nine young men of the village who never returned from the First World War and are placed near the war memorial in Charlton Church. They will be the centre of a village event taking place on 10th November, on the centenary of the end of the war, to commemorate and honour these men and to remember how they gave their today for our tomorrow. At 2.00pm in the Old Schoolroom, Charlton, an illustrated talk will be given on the stories behind each of those named on the war memorial, including their lives in the village and where they fought and died. This will be followed at 3.00pm by a formal commemoration at the war memorial in the church to which all will be welcomed, particularly present members and veterans of the armed and other uniformed services. This commemoration will include music and poetry followed by the laying of a wreath by family of those who died. The event will conclude with a dedication and the last post. Donations will be in aid of armed forces charities. In the meantime, everyone is encouraged to visit the church to sit with our young men in silhouette form and contemplate their sacrifice. The award of the silhouettes was made under the Armistice and Armed Forces Communities programme, which makes awards to bring communities together to remember; and to think about the Armed Forces today ENDS Notes to Editors The Workman Trust is a registered charity which manages the Charlton Old schoolroom which is a centre of village social activities and also hosts the local pre-school and scouts.
