JOHN Denton’s bringing his Midnight Band to Worcester, but you won’t have to stay up too late to catch his haunting blues.

In the talented line-up will be singer, songwriter and guitarist John, with Colin Warren on bass, Alan Davies on guitar, Robin Powell on keyboards and Morris Windsor on drums, plus a special guest appearance by Dave Smith, “one of the Midlands’ finest blues harmonica players”.

A spokesman said: “John will apply his soulful, blues-inflected voice to a selection of self-penned songs from his album Jupiter and the Crescent Moon as well as new material, plus songs by the likes of Billie Holliday, Robben Ford, Lowell George and Steely Dan’s Becker and Fagen.

“Singer, songwriter and guitarist John Denton has been part of the Midlands music scene for the past twenty years and is acknowledged by many as having one of the best rock and blues voices in the region.”

The spokesman added: “After moving to Malvern in 1992, John joined the Birmingham-based blues band, 7:17 Blues.

“The band gained quite a reputation in the West Midlands for their authentic sixties Chicago sound, covering the best of Muddy Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy the second and Little Walter.

“Now, John Denton’s Midnight Band is the platform for his own songs – as well as some covers and interpretations of a few of his all-time favourites.”

John’s own songs have an eclectic mix of influences.

The spokesman said: “You can expect jazzy, funky, soulful grooves with acoustic and electric elements, creating an original, cool and laidback sound – perfect for an early autumn evening.”

Critics have raved about the vocals, and The Blues in Britain magazine praised John’s “superb voice”.

The gig takes place on Friday, October 12, at 7.30pm at Huntingdon Hall.
