DEAF and hard of hearing people can now sign their way through the carol book thanks to a new mobile phone app launched by a Worcester charity.

Deaf Direct has been working with Fat Boy Apps to produce a range of festive favourites with a difference - they are all in sign language.

The carols feature subtitles and music and are also available on a DVD.

Chief Executive Philip Gerrard said the app is another example of how advances in technology are “opening up the world” for deaf people.

“If you imagine 15 years ago, you could not hear on the phone and there was no mobile texting, no webcam and very few people using email,” he said. “Deaf people do enjoy music and we’re pleased to be part of such a fantastic product which allows deaf and hard of hearing people equal access to carols this Christmas.”

Three different apps priced from 69p for the easy version to £1.49 for the advanced are available to download, or DVDs can be purchased from deafdirect.org.uk for £7.99.

It is estimated that one in seven people have a hearing loss and Deaf Direct offers services including aids and equipment, lipreading and sign language classes and social groups.
