THE chairman of Upton in Bloom has warned that it will be impossible for the group to keep up with its current standards unless more support can be found.

Upton in Bloom has enjoyed yet another successful year, claiming gold and winning its category in the Heart of England in Bloom competition as well as a silver in Britain in Bloom.

But speaking after the group’s annual general meeting, where she was re-elected as chairman, Jackie Surtees said: “The agm went well, and we certainly want to continue. But we are an ageing group and I don’t feel that we can do as much work physically as we have done this year.

“We will be approaching various groups about getting involved in some of our projects and as ever we would like to appeal for more volunteers to come forward and help us with what we do.”

Mrs Surtees said the situation would be assessed fully in the new year, when a decision over whether to enter the Heart of England in Bloom competition will have to be made.

“We will continue in some form, and we will keep on with most of our displays whatever we do,” she added. “But without more help I do think it is very unlikely we will be able to continue as we have in previous years.”

At the agm Simon Wilkinson was re-elected as treasurer and former town clerk Andrea Oliver named as the new secretary.

Prizes for the organisation’s local competitions were also awarded, with Mr and Mrs John Little, of Rectory Road, claiming the trophies for best front, back and overall gardens.

At the meeting Upton in Bloom was also presented with a cheque for £80 from Barbara Hartley, representing the donations collected over the year at her ‘Mr Bill and Mrs Lizzie’ garden in Dunns Lane.
