FIRE fighters were called to a fire in Charles Way, Malvern at around 10pm last night (Wednesday 19 October).

Two crews from Malvern and one from Worcester attended and on arrival they found a well-developed fire involving a large conifer hedgerow which had spread to an adjacent shed and lean-to, and was also threatening the bungalow the lean-to was attached to.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets to tackle the fire, bringing it under control in just over half an hour.

A woman safely evacuated from the bungalow, and there were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Station Commander Adrian Thompson said: “This fire certainly had the potential to be very serious. Thankfully we had several calls reporting the incident, and firefighters were at the scene within minutes, working hard to bring the fire under control and minimise damage to the bungalow.”

He said that the hedge, the shed and the plastic-roofed lean-to were extensively damaged as a result of the fire, while guttering and fascia on the bungalow was also heat damaged. Firefighters also checked inside the bungalow for potential spread, but were able to confirm that damage was to the exterior of the property only.

An investigation is underway to establish how the fire started, and West Mercia Police have confirmed that they will be stepping up patrols in the area.
