FORMER Malvern College pupil Captain Guy Disney and his Walking with the Wounded team-mates got a standing ovation when they appeared at the Cheltenham Literature Festival on Saturday, October 15.

Captain Disney, whose right leg was amputated below the knee after serving in Afghanistan, together with Capt Martin Hewitt who lost the use of his right arm also in Afghanistan, and co-founder of Walking with the Wounded, Ed Parker, met presenter Ben Fogle to talk about their experiences.

The team made the trek to the North Pole in April and were accompanied by Prince Harry, their patron, who was able to spend four days with them on the ice.

It took the expedition team a remarkably quick 13 days to reach the North Pole, after battling temperatures of minus 38c and winds bringing the temperature down yet further. The team covered a distance in the region of 160 miles across the frozen polar ice-cap.

Next year, Walking with the Wounded will be tackling an even bigger challenge: scaling Mount Everest and putting four wounded servicemen on top of the world.
