MALVERN man Bob Atkins is retiring from his post as liaison officer at the Three Counties Showground, 54 years after he first set foot there.

Mr Atkins first worked for the Three Counties Agricultural Society at the age of 15, as an ice-cream seller at the Three Counties Show.

He left in 1959 to sign up for the Queen’s Own Hussars tank regiment, stationed mainly in Germany. A stint with the fire brigade in Carmarthen followed and then a long stretch with his own business, Morris Minor Services, in Malvern.

Mr Atkins finally returned to the showground in 2001, as a banner man, and a year later became the showground manager’s assistant.

He officially retired in 2006, but remained involved, as liaison officer and west gate supervisor at the main shows, overseeing health and safety as well.

“I have very much enjoyed liaising with event organizers and playing my part in keeping the showground safe and secure”, he said, “but it’s now time to hang up my boots.”
