A QUILT which is being raffled to raise money for assistance dogs for disabled people went on display this week.

The quilt, made by members of Malvern Quilters, is on show at the Malvern Art Gallery, Worcester Road.

Money raised from the raffle will help fund Canine Partners, which trains assistance dogs. Tickets, at just £1, are available from the gallery.

Quilters' member Stella Hewitt has had an assistance dog, called Jenson, for 17 months. He is a highly-trained dog who can perform all sorts of household tasks.

She has launched Jenson’s Colour Wheel Appeal to raise £10,000 to providing a fully-trained canine partner for another disabled person.

Stella discovered her love of quilting following the car accident 12 years ago that left her in a wheelchair.

She said: “Before the crash that so drastically changed my life, I loved the challenge of getting up mountains. Now patchwork and quilting have become my new mountain and it’s equally challenging in a different way.”

She has also launched a junior quilter's challenge, open to under-16s, with a Janome sewing machine as the first prize. The closing date for entries is June 1, and the quilts will be displayed later that month at Beacon Dental Care, Malvern.
