COMMUNITY carol concerts took place in the chapel at Stanbrook Abbey earlier this week, the first time the historic building has opened its doors to the public in more than 170 years.

More than 240 guests attended the evening carol concerts in the former convent at Callow End. The concerts were a celebration of Christmas in words and music and were led by the local Powick Parish Community Choir. All proceeds from ticket sales were donated to Acorn’s Children’s Hospice.

It was a rare opportunity for the outside world to visit Stanbrook Abbey since its purchase in 1835 by a community of Benedictine nuns. The order was based there for 170 years and moved out in May last year to move to a purpose-built convent in North Yorkshire.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Powick Parish Community Choir to open the chapel for this year’s carol concert and taking the opportunity to support Acorns,” said Suzanne Taylor, managing director of Amazing Retreats.
