A MEMORIAL rugby match in Upton has raised £1,700 for St Richard’s Hospice.

The match for the Morton-Foley Memorial Trophy was held at the Upton Rugby Club in memory of former player Justin Morton and coach Robin Foley. Both men died in 2007.

The memorial match was described as “a very good day” by Tim Badger, of Upton Rugby Club.

“There was a massive turn out and everyone dug deep. It shows just how well regarded Justin and Robin were and how much they are missed,” said Mr Badger.

The match was between the Moreton-Foley Memorial Team and a visiting team from Evesham. The score was 29-10 and the winners were the memorial team. Man of the Match was Mark Tether.

“Everyone had a good time. It was a chance for a lot of old friends to get together and we’re pleased to have raised some more money for St Richard’s,” said Mr Badger.

This was the third Morton-Foley Memorial Rugby Match and the club are hoping to make it an annual event. So far the matches have raised £8,700 for charity.

“All the players are getting older so I’m not sure if we will manage a rugby match every year but we will have a Morton-Foley memorial day at the club of some kind. Perhaps get together to watch a match,” said Mr Badger.

As well as the game there was a pig roast and a fund-raising raffle.
