A MAN entered Hereford College of Arts and threatened to slash his wrists with a razor blade following a desperate plea to see his ex-girlfriend, a court heard.

Daniel Brooks, aged 22, of Oak Crescent, Malvern, had already been told that the 17-year-old was not at the Folly Lane campus when he returned for a third time with the blade.

Prosecutor Colin Held told Hereford Magistrates Court on Monday that Brooks threatened to cut his wrists if the police were not called and that the female victim has since been suffering from anxiety and stress.

Superintendent Charlie Hill confirmed that a Taser was deployed by police during the arrest on October 5 and students were locked in classrooms.

Mr Held said that Brooks was on conditional bail at the time after previously harassing the teenager and that he also visited a pub where she worked.

Brooks pleaded guilty to two cases of harassment against her and a further two harassment charges against another ex-girlfriend, with whom he has an 18-month-old son. The court heard that he sent both women a large number of unwanted text messages, phone calls and emails and even used another person’s pseudonym to message the mother of his child on social networking site Facebook.

He then continued to contact both of them while in custody.

In defence, Matt Lewis said that Brooks committed a low-level form of harassment and, even though he accepts that his unwanted contact would likely cause stress to the two women, no physical harm resulted.

“There were concerns about his emotional well-being as he had some difficulty coping with the stress of ending his relationship, which led to him going to the college with a razor blade,” said Mr Lewis.

Brooks was given a 12-month restraining order against the two women, but was told that he can make contact with his son through a solicitor.

Presiding magistrate Graham Bradley also placed a curfew on him for three months, meaning that Brooks must wear a tag and be at his home address from 7pm until 7am. He was also given a 12-month community order.
