THE fate of the appeal to bring an ambitious Morgan sculpture to Great Malvern remains uncertain.

Earlier this year organisers of the ambitious appeal launched a last-ditch bid to raise the necessary funds.

As of June just £60,000 of the £300,000 required had been raised.

September 30 had initially been set as the deadline to either find the outstanding money or a guarantor, or wind up the project.

But that date was put back when Roger Moran, the chairman of the Morgan Statue Foundation, was injured in an accident while visiting Belgium.

Trustee and Malvern Town councillor Mike Selby said that trustees are now trying to arrange a meeting in the next couple of weeks and that more will be known once this has taken place.

The foundation aims to place a life-size bronze model of a 1958 Morgan 4/4 at the Priory Gatehouse, and planning permission for the project was secured three years ago.

It was originally hoped that the statue would be ready for 2009, to coincide with Morgan’s centenary celebrations.

Donations have been received from both Morgan and Ford Motor Companies, as well as Morgan clubs and enthusiasts around the world.

However trustees have blamed the shortfall on increased material costs and reduced availability of lottery funding.

If the appeal is wound up then the foundation will re-imburse all traceable donations.

Anonymous donations would either be used to cover costs or given to charity.
