AS Great Malvern Priory celebrates its’ 925th Anniversary Light and Dark recalls many of the events that have coloured the priory’s history.

Choirs of school children and adults, solo singers, readers with wonderful vocal expertise, actors who mimed brilliantly in unison with the readers, expressive dancers and a first rate group of musicians who formed a splendid small orchestra, all helped to bring this informative, witty, epic presentation, written and directed by Rob Swinton, to life.

An impressive music score was composed by Dave Lane, and Carol Green was the able Musical Director. Stunning projected lighting effects were by Simon Swift.

First, Lucifer fought Michael in a battle of good trying to overcome evil. Among many of Malvern’s characters represented were the Hermit, the Virgin Mary, depicted as a present day ‘mod’, monks arguing, priests and their wicked ways, those concerned with the Water Cure, benefactors Lady Aphia Lyttleton and Lady Emily Foley and other aristocrats and the scientists who arrived and helped to develop radar to expose ‘U’boats.

The Radar Rag was a whacky swing number when dancers invited audience members into a groovy dance down the aisles!

Everyone enjoyed themselves and most will have learnt something new about Malvern. In the end we pondered ‘Who won the battle, St Michael or the Dragon?’ Son et Lumiere continues until November 13.
