WITH dozens of public bonfire events and countless more private ones set to take place in and around Malvern this weekend, the Fire Service is urging everyone to stay safe as they celebrate.

Community safety advisors from Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service have been leading special assemblies in schools and are keen that the whole community takes the vital safety messages on board.

Community safety manager Launa Walker said: “We want everyone to enjoy a fun and hazard-free bonfire night and we’d urge anyone having their own celebration to follow some simple safety tips to help avoid injury or damage to their property.”

Although people are being advised to attend organised public events, those who do wish to hold their own displays are urged to follow these tips: * Only buy fireworks marked with the British Standard Kitemark BS 7114.

* Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.

* Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time.

* Always follow instructions carefully. Read them by torch or in daylight, never by a naked flame.

* Light fireworks at arm’s length with a taper and stand well back. Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.

* Never go back to fireworks once they are lit.

* Never throw fireworks and don’t put them in your pocket.

* Always supervise children around fireworks and never give sparklers to under-fives.

* Build bonfires well clear of buildings, hedges and sheds. Keep them to a manageable size and never use flammable liquids to help them light.

* Always check bonfires for children, animals or hazardous items such as aerosols before lighting.

* Don’t leave bonfires unattended and make sure they are out before leaving. Always keep a bucket of water or hosepipe nearby.

* Keep pets indoors with curtains closed.
