CRADLEY Primary School has been awarded the Green Flag award for its eco-friendly initiatives.

The school has been busy going green for more than 18 months and has adopted a range of ideas to make the school more sustainable.

Photo voltaic panels have been installed on the school roof to help the school generate its own electricity and in the summer months the school makes most of what it needs. Even in winter the 48 cells generate a good proportion of the electricity the school uses.

The school has also got its own garden where children grow fruit and vegetables in raised beds. The fruit is used for snacks in school and selling surplus plants to parents raises money to buy more seed and compost.

The school’s eco-mindedness extends into other areas of the curriculum and in this year’s school production the children have used re-cycled materials for backdrops and costumes.

They have also been involved in eco projects making slippers and shopping bags from re-cycled materials.

Pupils at the school are delighted with the award according to headteacher Dawn Hyett and the school council is currently considering the best place to display the flag.
